ArtPrize is coming to Grand Rapids Fall 2009 - $500,000 prizePosted: April 24, 2009 9:32 am. Rich DeVos, grandson of Amway co-founder and son of former Amway chief executive and gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos, has envisioned a new and innovative way to bring art to Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is expected to draw worldwide attention to its ArtPrize $500,000 competition through its integration of technology and hundreds of competitors. Similar to the very popular "American Idol", the competition will narrow down a group of ten competitors to compete in a second round of public voting. DeVos' ideas are centered around using technology to connect people to each other or to art in new and interesting ways. The call to thousands of artists to register by July 31, 2009 via the website ArtPrize.org. Voters also need to register and are only allowed one vote so that ballot-stuffing and internet manipulations are avoided. Grand Rapids has been positioning itself as a "cultural capital" over the years. Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park which combines horticulture and art opened in April 1995. |
